Drobo

Drobo

I bought a Drobo Version 2 with USB2.0 and Firewire 800. Additionally I got two 1 TB Samsung HD103UJ drives. Installed fine and running like charm. But after putting a lot of data on it, the filesystem corrupted. I managed to get the most data back with the help of testdrive and Photorec.

So I tried again with a lunsize of 2TB and a freshly formatted ext3. I used the droboutils from sourceforge to access the drobo itself. I again copied stuff on to the drobo and it work without errors.

But I have had to reboot my linux host due to kernel update and the filesystem, which was unmounted correctly, was corrupted again and fsck.ext3 was not able to check it. I again spent a week of testdrive and photorec on the device. But my data was gone. A loss of about 600 GByte. Great pain.

[Update: See Drobo currently stable]

So I start to disbelieve in the stability of this solution. But before I will give in, I’d like to test this out, if this is reproducable. So this is what will follow now.

The system setup is:

  • Ubuntu 7.10 (Linux TheCore 2.6.22-16-generic #1 SMP Mon Nov 24 18:28:27 GMT 2008 i686 GNU/Linux)
  • droboutils Version 0.4.0
  • drobo says firmware revision:  1 . 248 ( 15408 ) was built:  Dec  2 2008,10:24:08
  • drobo connected with USB

I will start with the following scenario:

  1. Format the drobo with a lunsize of 2TB with the droboview
  2. Write down the layout of the fdisk, status of the drobo and everything.
  3. Put about 367 GBytes of data on to the share.
  4. Write down the layout of the fdisk, status of the drobo and everything.
  5. Unmount the share
  6. Shutdown the drobo
  7. Restart the drobo
  8. Write down the layout of the fdisk, status of the drobo and everything.
  9. Try to mount the drobo
  10. Write down the layout of the fdisk, status of the drobo and everything.

So here we go:

1. Format the drobo with a lunsize of 2TB with the droboview

I started the format (see picture) and see output on console.

5. Unmounting drobo

Worked without any warning

6. Shutdown drobo

drobom shutdown did shutdown the drobo. The green light of the drives and the blue lights went off. Underneath the front door the power led went orange. I now unplug the usb from the computer. [2960252.798494] usb 5-7: USB disconnect, address 45

7. Restart the drobo

Plugin the usb into the same usb port on the computer. Drobo boots normally green leds at the drives, green at power. Normal blue progress bar when starting. At the end 4 blue leds are on.

8. Write down the layout of the fdisk, status of the drobo and everything.

9. Try to mount the drobo

This time it worked without a problem. But I will now wait a week and restart at step 4. mount /Drobo [2960591.116900] kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds [2960591.126349] EXT3 FS on sdd1, internal journal [2960591.126359] EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
